If you are lucky, the weather will be nice and it will be mid-morning when your furnace goes on the fritz. This will not only keep the home a bit warmer but mans you may have the chance to get a technician to the house during business hours and save the fee for an emergency call. However, it doesn't always happen this way. It seems that people wake up in the middle of the night because it got cold suddenly. Even if you decide to contact a furnace repair company, and they can get the technician out to you right away, you will still want to get the house to a reasonable temperature before everyone wakes up. Here are a few things you can do to take off the chill.

Seal Everything

Go through the house and tape or stuff all the seams. Use plastic to go around windows and stuff blankets at the bottom of all doors. If there are rooms that won't be needed, use large sheets of plastic to block them off if they don't have doors. Many living and/or dining rooms are open to the adjourning rooms, seal them off as much as possible. Go through the house and close all air vents. A lot of air is lost through small leaks in the vents. This air could be used to maintain the warmth.

Cook and Bake

Even if it is in the middle of the night, get up and bake something. Turn the oven on and make some bread or rolls for breakfast. Of course, you could also just turn the oven on and go back to bed. However, having some nice, warm baked goods for breakfast will make everyone feel better about the situation. Plan on a big breakfast too. The stove can give off some heat. As people wake up, have them take a hot shower to take off the first chill of getting out of bed. Then, if you have sealed the other rooms, everyone can gather in the warmed kitchen for a family meal. Make sure you close all the bedroom and bathroom doors once everyone is done using them for the morning.

Hopefully, the technician can get to your home and will have all the necessary parts to have the furnace working again before everyone is home for the evening. While it might be a bit of a different morning ritual, you can turn it into family fun time if you keep your own stress down and use the mentioned tips for keeping things warm.
